2024 Prize Submissions Open!
The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction is a major new English-language literary award to celebrate creativity and excellence in fiction by women and non-binary writers in the United States and Canada.
We’re writing to you from the Carol Shields Prize, celebrating excellence in fiction by women and non-binary authors in the U.S. and Canada.
We are now open to submissions for our 2024 Prize. The winning author will receive $150,000 USD and four shortlisted authors $12,500 USD each.
- For books published between January – July 31, submissions must be received by June 16, 2023.
- For books published between August 1 – December 31, submissions must be received by October 13, 2023.
We highly encourage you to submit your entries as soon as possible to support our Jury’s extensive reading process. We do not accept late submissions.

SUBMIT YOUR ENTIRES
Women and non-binary writers who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada and/or the U.S., writing for an adult audience, are eligible for the Prize.
We accept submissions of novels, short story collections, and graphic novels written and illustrated by the same person. Works in translation are eligible for the Prize. Please note publishers may submit only two titles per imprint, per publishing house.
Full submission guidelines can be found on our website. The longlist will be announced on March 8, 2024 (International Women’s Day), and the shortlist of 5 books will be announced in April. The Prize will be awarded in May, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
