Where do you write? ✍🏽
“In the early morning, I write in bed. For deep concentration, I retreat to the guest room (where the bed is covered with the crazy COVID quilt I crocheted.) Midmorning, I move to the leather chair in my office. In the afternoon, my laptop follows me to the family room couch. And if I’m going to night-write, I’m back in bed. Rarely do I write at my desk—much as I love it—that’s where I Zoom, pay bills, and write letters and cards. And I never-never-never write anywhere public! No coffee-shop writing for me.”

Describe your writing aura/aesthetic/vibe. ✍🏽
“My peak writing vibe? Leaving home (and no, not to a coffee shop). Twice a year, I retreat to Provincetown with a writing friend—but only in the offseason, when the town feels nearly haunted. We embrace a monk-like discipline: silence except for dinner and enforced hour-long walks to unkink our writing-stiff bodies. No cooking. Spotless house. No TV. One massage per retreat—because even devotion needs a little indulgence.”

Where do you find inspiration in the day-to-day? ✍🏽
“Day-to-day, I find inspiration in the magazines and newspapers I devour (too many to admit!), the talismanic objects I collect that bring my novel-in-progress to life (thank you, eBay), and the books, art, and photography—often by friends—that surround me at home—and I rely on three statues made by my mother-in-law (Nefertiti, Buddha, and a black cat). And I need plants. Lots and lots of plants. And gardening. Always gardening.”

In true monk-like fashion: coffee, immediately and without question. Water, because survival. And when I’m feeling downright wild? Ginger tea.
