Anela’s Club

by D.K. Yamashiro

Anela’s Club is the story of a disadvantaged multiracial teen, reeling from family tragedy, who struggles to put her life back together by using the one skill she has, writing, to win a scholarship—and a chance at Harvard. When Anela’s brother dies on the football field, she withdraws into herself. A few people try to help her including a teacher. But it’s a senator who leads Anela to the little-known fact that many U.S. presidents and world leaders suffered and survived childhood trauma. She can’t let that thought go. Does that mean she too could turn her pain into something better? This is a coming-of-age story from tragedy, economic, racial, and relational challenges that shape how life is seen, from a lens of hope and love.
