Dayna Bailey

Dayna Bailey has been passionate about writing and telling stories since she was three. As a preschooler, she would dictate short stories for her mother to type, and wrote her first short novel at the age of twelve. Mark Bland

Mark started his writing adventures when his play Love Around the Poisoned Dollar went into production in 1973. He then became a German teacher in the Virginia Beach Schools. Mark also was an Assistant Professor for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he is now in his 30th year, instructing classes in Humanities, English, and Psychology. In 2008 he was awarded Instructor of the Year for the Hampton Roads area.

Bland has published numerous outdoor articles for several magazines, including Virginia Wildlife. After winning an NFIE (National Foundation for the Improvement of Education) grant in 1994, for Chess for Cognitive Development, Mark went on to  publish several chess articles and the book The Four Chessmen (2001), included in this collection.

In 2010 Mark was a winner in the “America’s got Stories” contest for the short story Teufel’s Bridge. Knights, Castles & Kings is his first collection of novels.

Paul Clancy

Paul Clancy has been a journalist for over forty years, part of the time in Washington where he covered national politics and wrote biographies about Watergate Chairman Sam Ervin and House Speaker Tip O’Neill. He worked for The Charlotte Observer, USA Today and The Washington Star. In 1993, Clancy moved to Norfolk and became editor of Calypso Log, the magazine of the Cousteau Society. In the mid-nineties Clancy went to work for The Virginian-Pilot, covering water-related issues – sailing adventures, diving, sunken treasure and sunken ships, to mention a few. Colonel Stephen D. Cork U.S. Army (Retired) enjoyed a successful military career of nearly twenty seven years. While working as the Commandant of the Academy, Colonel Cork penned a fictional short story titled Take That,  published by The Pepper Tree. He wrote a novel in 2006 titled Fat Chance (aka Knight Moves). This was the first novel published in the Jenny O’Shane thriller series and became highly popular in the Sarasota community. Colonel Cork retired from the Military Academy in 2011 to devote more time to his writing. Jo-Ann Costa

Jo-Ann Costa studied her craft at the knees of her clannish Alabama kin, who are among the most accomplished at fabricating outlandish tales. Rue Elliott

Rue Elliott started her writing career by telling herself bedtime stories. Eventually, she progressed to actually putting words on paper, starting many a tale and finishing none, with new ideas continuously stepping in to vie for her attention. Finally, in the summer of 2010, she completed her first novel.

She has studied under authors Tim Farrington and Janine Latus, and belongs to the Writer’s Unleashed critique group. Her work has also appeared in the magazine The Quotable.

In addition to her work as a writer, Rue is a glass artist. When she is not spinning tales, she can be found in her workshop with either kiln or torch.

My Haley

Growing up under her grandmother’s watchful, wise tutelage, My Lewis Haley spent her early childhood in South Charleston, West Virginia, before her parents moved the family to Columbus, Ohio. While working her doctorate in Communications at Ohio State University, My was inspired by a speech the author Alex Haley delivered on campus. After receiving her PhD, she set out on her next goal: to work with the renowned author. Impressed by My’s drive and talent, Haley gave her a major assignment—to assist him in writing the remaining two-thirds of a book that was long overdue to his publisher. Within a matter of months together they completed the work and that book, Roots, catapulted Alex Haley to international fame. John Koehler

In 2005, John published his first book, Bipolar by Koehler, about living with bipolar syndrome. Dr. Thomas K. Tsao

Dr. Tom Tsao is a Board Certified psychiatrist who still continues to practice in Virginia Beach, Va. at Atlantic Psychiatric Services, a practice he founded in 1982. John Quarstein

John V. Quarstein is an award-winning historian, preservationist, lecturer, and author. He served as historian for the city of Hampton’s 400th anniversary. He previously worked for thirty years as the director of the Virginia War Museum and as consultant to The Mariners’ Museum’s MONITOR Center.

Quarstein has been involved in a wide variety of historic preservation initiatives including the creation of Civil War battlefield parks like Redoubt Park in Williamsburg or Lee’s Mill Park in Newport News as well as historic house museums such as Lee Hall Mansion and Endview Plantation. Michael Simone

Michael Simone is the founding and Senior Pastor of Spring Branch Community Church in Virginia Beach, VA. His first ministry assignment, in 1972, was working with street kids in East Harlem, NY. He teaches Religious Studies at Saint Leo University, South Hampton Roads Center. Michael is also a psychiatric hospital chaplain, leading spirituality groups. Robert J. Walker

Robert J. Walker was the third Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON). He was born in Baldwin, New York, attended grammar and high school in Oxford, New York, and enlisted in the Navy in 1948.

After just eight years of active service, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer, later promoted to Master Chief in 1963. Walker was sworn in as the third MCPON on September 26, 1975.

Walker was a staunch defender of enlisted personnel and also a strong advocate of re-establishing the esprit de corp of the Navy.

His awards and decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), United Nations Korea Medal, Presidential Unit Citation (Korea), and 7 Service Stripes.

Walker retired September 28, 1979, and has been active following his retirement, serving as President of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association. In 1990, Robert J. Walker Hall, the home of Operations Specialist “A” School at Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic, Dam Neck, Virginia was named for him.

Robert Walker is married to Fran Walker; they have six children, Kathy, Linda, Robert, Jr., Teri, Michael and Michelle; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. MCPON Walker lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia near the Chesapeake Bay.

Dr. Larry E. White and Anne H. Harrell

Larry E. White is a practicing child neurologist at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, certified in Pediatrics and Neurology/Child Neurology. In practice now for over 30 years, his medical school training was in Memphis at the University of Tennessee, followed by pediatric training at David Grant USAF Medical Center in California. After four years in general pediatric practice he did additional training in neurology and child neurology at the Medical College of Virginia and Eastern Virginia Medical School, serving as a child neurologist in the Air Force. After a 14 year military career, he returned to Norfolk as a civilian in 1988. Dr. White’s prior writings include pamphlets for new parents, guides for pediatric house staff, one book chapter and two dozen abstracts and articles. This is his first book.

Anne H. Harrell is a wife to Mark W. Harrell Sr, and mother of six children. Five of Mark and Anne’s children have mild to severe mental disabilities. Anne is presently a student in Ashford University and is double majoring for a BA degree in English Communications and Journalism, and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2013.  The Harrell’s lost their oldest daughter Cynthia on January 1, 1997 to a seizure disorder. Anne has written many articles for print and the Web. This is her first book.

Jennifer Willows is a college student currently residing in Portland, Oregon. She was born and raised on a horse farm in Olympia, Washington and has attended a private Christian school her entire life. Jennifer loves animals, but especially horses, cats, and Jellyfish. She also has a deep interest in Psychology, and hopes to one day help hurting people find freedom from their disorders without the use of drugs. She hopes to return to this sport soon though, and plans to take up cycling and intramural Tennis as well. Jennifer’s favorite book is The Pickwick Papers By Charles Dickens; her favorite TV show is Monk, and her favorite Disney movie is The Great Mouse Detective.

Bascom Wilson

Born and raised in Louisiana, Bascom Wilson traveled the globe courtesy of the U.S. armed forces.  After his retirement, he earned a graduate degree and entered the corporate world as a telecommunications consultant.  He decided to share his knowledge as an associate professor at a local community college.

Bascom has been married since 1974 to his soul mate, Nina, a registered nurse. They have  three fantastic children and seven  grandchildren, all whom reside in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area. Misguided Justice is Bascom’s first novel, and is part of the Beach Murder Mystery line.

Danny Woodall

Danny Woodall has written for LifeWay’s Bible Express and Essential Connections, has a monthly column in the Christian Online Magazine, and has contributed to several anthologies. He is also working on an anthology called, “Thank You For Your Hero” along with author, Melanie Stiles. Woodall has a degree in education from Lamar University. He has worked with children for over thirty years and has three children with his wife Arlene. This is his first novel.

While living in Malaysia, author Marlene Zefferys published several books on education; co authored Secrets of a Rainbow Goddess, a romantic, adventure novel; and Khymer Bronzes From the 9th to the 15th Centuries, and Thai Customs and Etiquette. She first became aware of the devastation of international animal smuggling while living in Malaysia where she was coordinator of the Malaysian American Commission on Educational Exchange advising center. Exposed to frequent reports of exotic animals taken from the rain forests of S.E. Asia she took the cause to heart and wanted to make a difference. She has a BS/PreMed degree in Zoology from the University of Manitoba and has worked in medical research and education in the U.S. and Canada.
